Modern history

Modern history, also referred to modern period or the modern era, is the historical timeline after the middle Ages. Modern history can be further broken down into the early modern period and the late modern period after the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. Contemporary history is the span of historic events that are immediately relevant to the present time.

The modern era began approximately in the 16th century. Many major events caused Europe to change around the start of the 16th century, starting with the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the fall of Muslim Spain and the discovery of the Americas in 1492, and Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation in 1517. In England the modern period is often dated to the start of the Tudor period with the victory of Henry VII over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Early modern European history is usually seen to span from the start of the 15th century, through the Age of Reason and the Age of Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries, until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century.

1. "Universal Soldier" Donovan Album:Love Is Hot, Truth Is Molten
He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can't you see,

This is not the way we put the end to war.
2. "Handsome Johnny" Ritchie Havens Album:Mixed Bag
Hey, what's the use of singing this song, some of you are not even listening.
Tell me what it is we've got to do: wait for our fields to start glistening,
Wait for the bullets to start whistling.
Here comes a hydrogen bomb, here comes a guided missile,
Here comes a hydrogen bomb: I can almost hear its whistle.

3. "Misanthropic Philanthropy" Lotus Tribe featuring S.E.L.F. Album: Misanthropic Philantropy
Soldiers don't give yourselves to brutes.
Men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, and what to think, and what to feel.
Who drill you, guide you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
Don't give yourself to these unnatural men, machine men with machine minds and machine hearts
You are not machines
you are not cattle
you are men
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don't hate.
Only the unloved hate.
The unloved and the unnatural.
Soldiers don't fight for slavery fight for liberty.

4. "I ain't marching anymore" Phil Ochs Album: I Ain't Marching Anymore
Now the labor leader's screamin' when they closed the missile plant,
United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore.
call it peace or call it treason,
call it love or call it reason.
but I ain't a-marching anymore!
I ain't a-marching anymore!

5. "The Revolution will not be televised" Gil Scott Heron Album: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
You will not have to worry about a dove in your bedroom, a tiger in your tank, or the giant in your toilet bowl.
The revolution will not go better with Coke.
The revolution will not fight the germs that may cause bad breath.
The revolution will put you in the driver's seat.

6."Yes We Can, Can" Pointer Sisters Album: Yes We Can Can: The Best of the Blue Thumb Recordings
Now's the time for all good men to get together with one another.
We got to iron out our problems and iron out our quarrels and try to live as brothers.
And try to find a piece of land without stepping on one another.
And do respect the women of the world. Remember you all have mothers.
We got to make this land a better landthan the world in which we live.
And we got to help each man be a better man with the kindness that we give.
I know we can make it.
I know darn well we can work it out.
Oh yes we can, I know we can can
Yes we can can, why can't we?

7. "Old Man Atom" The Sons of the Pioneers Album: Protest: American Protest Songs 1928-1953
Here's my moral, plain as day,
Old Man Atom is here to stay.
He's gonna hang around, it's plain to see,
But, ah, my dearly beloved, are we?
We hold these truths to be self-evident
All men may be cremated equal.

All we are saying is give peace a chance

9. "I feel like I'm Fixin to Die Rag" Country Joe and the Fish
Album: I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die
Yeah, come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

10. "Son of a Bush" Public Enemy Album: Revolverlution
Now here's the pitch
Hiding inside certified genocide
Ain't that a Bush, repeat ain't that a Bush?
Out of nowhere headed to the hot house
Killed 135 at the last count
Texas Bounce! Texas Bounce! (c'mon)
Cats in a cage got a ghost of a chance
Of comin back from your whack-ass killin machine
Son of a Bush, ain't that a son of a Bush
Cats doin bids for the same Bush-shit that you did (the father)
Serial killer kid, uhh! Serial killer kid

When the president talks to God?
